2010 Accomplishments & 2011 Goals

As 2010 comes to a close, I thought it would be worthwhile for me to look back & see how much I've grown as a seamstress. Here are the projects I've completed.

  1. Ruffle butt onesie
  2. Ruffle diaper cover
  3. Pillowcase dress
  4. Pillowcase dress #2
  5. Toddler tie
  6. Toddler tie #2
  7. Toddler backpack
  8. Baby jumper
  9. Matching hoodie
  10. diaper cover
  11. Harper Dress
  12. Kylie Dress
  13. 2 pairs pajama pants for Shawn
  14. Lounge pants for myself
  15. Lounge pants for mom
  16. Apron for myself
  17. Apron for my sister
  18. Sweater cardigan
  19. Fleece hoodie cardigan
  20. Toddler dress coat
In addition to that, I also started a straight skirt that I have yet to complete. I didn't do a muslin before I sewed it up & so I've got some fitting issues. So, 20+ successful, wearable, useful items in less than 1 year of sewing (I think I started in May). I must admit; I am quite proud of myself. I mean, I didn't even know how to thread my sewing machine in the beginning.

The biggest challenge for me was just learning the quirks of my (borrowed) machine. I didn't have the manual (though later acquired it & found it useless) & like anything, the machine had it's own quirks & only time could reveal them. Now that I've bought a new machine, we're starting at square one.

My biggest victory, I'd say, was getting comfortable with my (again, borrowed) serger. I used to get so nervous using it that my heart would pound. But we get along quite well now.

I think my favorite project was the toddler back pack. But the project I'm most proud of is my son's dress coat.

As far as I've come this year, I have a few things I'd like to accomplish in 2011.
  • Experiment with different types of seam finishing
  • Sew a vintage pattern
  • Gain proficiency in buttonholes & zippers
  • Make my own slip
  • Work with "tricky" fabrics
  • Sew outfits, rather than individual "orphan" pieces
  • Find & develop a style my style
  • Keep fabric stash size down (maybe keep track of yardage in/out)
  • Buy fabric from more resources
  • Make Shawn's Quilt
