Because Sewing Just Isn't Enough

I love to sew. Taking a flat piece of fabric & transforming it into a 3 dimensional object with my own two hands is beyond fulfilling.

But it has it's shortcomings. It's a tad intense. I've succumbed to sewing only when the kids are asleep for the time being (and now that the baby is crawling, it's even more important that the kiddos be out of range when I'm sewing away). It's been better for everyone involved.

I found a doll pattern that I wanted to sew up (it's in progress) and the face is embroidered. Since I've never done embroidery, I decided to do some research. I came across the flikr embroidery pool and was blown away. I've never seen such exquisite stitching. This was not the embroidery I knew.  One thing led to another & I found myself at Sublime Stitching. Needless to say, I ordered the "Ultimate Embroidery Kit" and waited patiently for it to arrive.Once it did, this is what I stitched:

Mannequin from Craft-opia Pattern Kit (Sublime Stitches)

I like that I can sit in front of the tv with my embroidery hoop. I like that I'll be able to take it on vacations. I love that I will be able to embellish my sewing projects. It's going to be a great addition to my creative outlet arsenal.

Have you been lead to other crafts through sewing? Did another artsy outlet lead you to sewing?

  1. So so cute! I really love the mannequin, and it certainly isn't the embroidery I'm used to seeing.

I've gone the other way, tried out nearly everything under the sun before coming to sewing. I love sewing more than everything else I've tried, honestly, although I've never done embroidery like this. DON'T TEMPT ME! :D

  2. That is one cute design! I have never done embroidery before but at moment trying to knit and/or crochet! So far I haven't been successful and sewing is still my top choice. Saying that I'll give everything a go, so might get a embroidery kit and see how it goes.

  3. That mannequin design is so adorable!! You are definitely crafty!! As for whether sewing has caused me to explore other crafts, not yet. I would love to learn to knit, but haven't done so yet.

  4. You did great ... you are a natural! I love that set of patterns though don't have it yet...hmmmm.. ;-). I sure hope to see what else you stitch!

My mom was very crafty (hand painted pottery, crochet, heirloom sewing, hand embroidery) and growing up I loved watching her crafting. At times she let me use her sewing machine-with her by my side- to make hair "scrunchies" and while hand embroidering she prepared a small yellow hoop with a white scrap of fabric in which she hand drew a daisy for me to embroider. However crochet was her thing... she never used patterns.
I grew up and lost interest until I knew I was expecting my 1st and only daughter (who is 5 now)... and the rest is history.
Started hand embroidering, then sewing, then with crochet and did a bit of knitting. I still do mostly hand embroidery and most recently hand applique/patchwork/quilting.

  5. Love the design :)
I am enjoying crochet at the moment, and am somewhat impatiently, trying to learn knitting too :) But I do like sewing the best right now.
