Finished! Ruched Maternity Top

Another finished maternity top--and I think this one was my favorite. :)  This is Megan Nielsen's Ruched Maternity Top.  I sewed a size small, and I'm very happy with the fit through the bust & belly.  I did find that the shoulders were a touch too big (though I'm finding that this is a common issue I have--in RTW and patterns). Next time I'll sew an XS through the shoulders.

I also find that the neckline is a tad wide--which is made worse by my sloping shoulders. I'm always adjusting to keep my bra straps from showing.  I would really like to frankenpattern this with the neckline of my tried & true S4076, I think the neckline gathers from that pattern would dress this up just a touch.

The tummy gathers are just right though, I like that the front is ruched but the back piece is not. The length is generous without being too much. I have no doubt that this top will last me straight to the end!

This pattern came together just as quickly as the other, and I have to say, it's the most professional looking hem that I've ever done.  I used my old standby, the twin needle & wooly nylon on the bobbin, but I also paired it with my walking foot this round. The results are stellar, if I may say so myself. :)  Can't wait to whip up 10  more of these babies (the shirt--not 10 more actual human babies)! :)

  1. Nice job on the top. I almost want to say that it looks store-bought, but that's not really that great of a compliment, considering the quality of RTW. :D That colour looks fantastic on you!

  4. I just purchased this pattern and saw your finished top on Pinterest - it looks great! I can't wait til the pattern arrives to get started. One question for you - have you bought much of the knit fabric you've been using online? Any recommendations? I've bought most of mine at big box sewing stores and haven't been thrilled with the quality of the fabric, but am nervous about buying online without a sense of how heavy or lightweight the fabric is. Just curious if you have any favorites to recommend.

    1. Hi Megan! Thanks for stopping by! Fabric shopping online can be so intimidating!!! I do feel like I'm starting to get the hang of it though. :) I LOVE fabric.com. They have a ton of knits, right now my favorite is this stuff:
      https://www.fabric.com/CategoryDetail.aspx?CategoryID=00cc5f39-a2ce-45af-994a-df6f05b9168f
Fabric.com also has a great return policy & you can always get swatches.

Also, fashionfabricsclub.com is really cheap & I can't say that I've ever been disappointed in what I've received. Most of the knits I've found are pretty lightweight, but still good quality. They do take a while to ship, though.

GirlCharlee.com has some really cute prints & she ships out super fast; great customer service, too. Hope that helps! I'm off to visit your blog! :)

    2. Thanks so much for the links, Jenna! The Robert Kauffman fabric looks like the exact thing I was trying to find. I was looking at Near Sea Naturals and the Fabric Fairy but not coming up with much that was affordable, especially for t-shirts that I'm only going to wear for a few months.

I got the pattern in the mail today and am testing it out with some knit fabric from my stash before purchasing anything else. Anyway, I really appreciate the info... I love the blogging world!
